The girls have been wanting to go to the snow forrrrreverrrrrr. A potential trip was thwarted by COVID and I kept them waiting for four years to test their certainty and patience. These two are in gloves, beanies, scarves, tracksuits and woollen socks (on feet and hands even!) when the overnight temperature drops below 20.c in Darwin. Luckily the magic of it exceeded the sensitivity of their skin.
We did go to the snow, and it was spectacular. This amounts to click bait because there are not many photos of it. I put my camera in the locker and spent the entire time drinking hot chocolate, holding up my children whilst they learnt to snowboard, and psyching myself out about getting off the ski lift without stacking it. I didn’t by the way. But I have in the past. And I even racked up a total of five runs thanks to Imogen and a knee injury which meant the main muscle she flexxed was her heart muscle whilst she supervised and entertained the girls on the slopes. Karl heard the word snow and got wind of having a doting aunty on standby. Suddenly he was there teaching the kids (and reminding me) how to snowboard, helping to lug gear up and down the mountain, and light the fireplace each morning and night. I highly recommend a 3 adult to 2 child ratio on the mountain; possibly for life in general. Take me back. Or take me to Japan in February… who is keen?
The photos will likely incriminate the rest of our schedule; Harry Potter and the cursed child - the actual mind blowing stage show, The Museum, Phar Lap, a real life, most complete in the whole world triceratop fossil, NGV and Picasso, Luna Park, The Zoo, forests, picnics, markets, magic shows, old friends from Darwin, non stop delicious food and so many litres of Gelato that the Messina staff knew us. And to think 3L or more extra actually came on Uber eats after the girls were in bed.
Travelling with an 8 and 7 year old gets 10/10. And that is not a facetious joke to trick other parents into doing it so I can sit back and laugh. They want responsibility for all the adult administrative and logistical efforts; to push your suitcase, complete the airline check in, carry the airline tickets, scan your tram ticket, carry your handbag. It’s like having really cute butlers that will work for hot chocolate and fairy floss.
All of these photos with the Leica M10 + Voiglander 40mm f/1.2.
